Seeing the light
In 1900, William Coffin Coleman was a young man who needed
money to pay for his final year at law school. So he started
selling lamps in Oklahoma, to fund his schooling. Coleman’s
vision was so poor that classmates had to read out loud to
him. But then one day Coleman saw the light…literally!
He spotted a lantern in the window of an Alabama drugstore,
which was bright enough for Coleman to later read even the
tiniest print! Gasoline, rather than oil from coal, was used
to power these lanterns. They also contained something called
mantles, rather than wicks. This lantern would be the inspiration
for today’s Coleman lanterns that light up a camper’s
world.
Where there’s a will
Coleman was thrilled by the brilliant lanterns, as chi

used his savings to buy stocks of the lanterns, and became
a salesman. However, a lightning salesman had recently hit

in rural areas, including campsites, and the U.S. government
distributed 70,000 pieces during World War I.
After the war ended, the car allowed

in the entire market.

After electricity began lighting rural areas through America,
